Urban Transparency Culinary Institute’s goal is to explore transparency--through physical, urban, and philosophical methodologies. Informed by Grant Achatz’s focus on surprise in cooking, our project responds with fabric, glass, and foliage transparencies all overlooked upon by an overhead walkway to create unexpected explorations of public and private user interaction. This was designed mindfully to ensure enjoyment and ease-of-use for both usertypes. Furthermore, this project complies elements of Dan Barber’s philosophy--which focuses on food sourcing and a cyclical engagement with our surrounding. To tackle this, the Culinary Institute implements a site water collection system recycling problematic water rainfall to repurpose in our culinary programs. In addition, this design addresses numerous qualms of existing in Pittsburgh at the crux between denser downtown, education, and commercial uses and residential sprawl: namely considering the entrances our site can employ to encourage engagement from all fronts, but a planned bus route which would allow for connections to all corners of Pittsburgh, spreading the knowledge of farming and cooking.
